November is the Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. Did you know that it can even affect your eyes?
Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively to control blood sugar (glucose) levels. Too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause damage in many parts of the body, which include the small blood vessels in the eye.
Diabetic eye disease is a term for several eye problems that can result from diabetes, including:
Diabetic Retinopathy,
Diabetic Macular Edema,
Cataract
Glaucoma.
The good news is that having a dilated eye exam yearly or more often can prevent 95 percent of diabetes-related vision loss.
Additionally, remember to keep tabs on your blood sugar levels and follow the diet and the exercise plan your doctor gave you.
