Introducing Vuity, a novel drop to correct presbyopia
Age related near-sightedness (presbyopia) is a bothersome loss of the ability to focus on near objects that usually starts in the mid 40’s and slowly progresses until the mid-sixties. It happens to everyone, even to those people with perfect 20/20 vision. It is due to a complex mechanism related to the natural aging of the eye, during which the natural lens becomes thicker and less elastic and the associated lens muscles that control it become weaker.
To compensate for the inability to clearly see objects nearby, many people purchase over the counter reading glasses that one can buy in pharmacies. Patients that initially wore glasses to see clear at distances may upgrade their prescription glasses with bifocals or progressive glasses.
A few patients opt to use contact lens where the power of one eye is fit for distance vision and the other non-dominant eye is fit to see more clearly at near vision, this is called monovision correction.
Another alternative is to wear a multifocal contact lens, this scenario is similar to progressive air glasses.
Now, a new game changer to correct age related nearsightedness is now available on the market – “Vuity” the first eye drop FDA approved to correct presbyopia. Vuity is diluted pilocarpine, a drug that temporarily and reversibly causes shrinking of the pupil which increases the depth of focus.
Five facts about Vuity:
- It is the first prescription eye drop FDA approved to correct presbyopia
- The effect lasts between eight to twelve hours
- It does not affect or cause blurriness for distance vision
- It has a high safety profile
- It is an exciting alternative to glasses!
