Refractive lens exchange
Refractive lens exchange, also called clear lens exchange, is an alternative for patients with moderate and severe farsightedness that want to be independent of glasses and are not a good candidate for corneal refractive surgery like Lasik, PRK or Smile procedure.
The natural lens is permanently replaced with an artificial lens (IOL) during a surgical procedure. Multiple refractive errors can be corrected nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and/or presbyopia.
Another advantage of the refractive lens exchange procedure is that cataract surgery will not be necessary in the future since the natural lens that ages developing a cataract will be removed.
Due to the advances of technology to perform the natural lens removal, more accurate formulas to calculate the appropriate power of the implants and the better-quality newer models of the artificial lens refractive lens exchange is a safe procedure with excellent outcomes.
More patients are choosing to have a better quality of life with glasses independence and contact lens.
Dr. Romero works closely with a retina specialist to identify those patients that are at risk to develop a retinal detachment during the pre-operative and post-operative period.
Three facts about Refractive lens exchange:
- It can correct multiple refractive errors
- It is a safe procedure if the candidates are carefully chosen
- It is not cover by medical or vision insurance since it’s considered an elective procedure
