Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve, which normally acts as a cable transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is often associated with an increase in intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eyeball) and is more common in some ethnic groups. Early detection and proper treatment are critical to prevent visual loss.

One of the many potential roles for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ophthalmology is the ability to predict which patients with risk factors will eventually develop the disease.

In a similar way AI may be used to predict which patients with glaucoma will progress to peripheral vision loss by analyzing images of the retina, optic nerve, blood vessels, and visual field tests. AI can be trained to recognize patterns and features.

AI systems may be able to assist the eye care provider, but they are not a replacement for a trained professional. A doctor should always be consulted for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
