Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are implantable lenses used in eye surgery to replace the natural lens when it becomes cloudy, typically due to cataracts.

In 2022 the FDA approved Aphtera® IC-8 small aperture intraocular lens, this lens uses the optical principle of pinhole effect to improve the depth of focus (range of vision).

The key idea behind pinhole optics is that the smaller the hole, the sharper the image. A smaller hole allows fewer light rays to pass through, resulting in less blurring or distortion.
The IC-8 intraocular lens  is a hydrophobic acrylic posterior chamber IOL with a circular mask and a small 1.36 mm central aperture. This pinhole mini-ring design in the center is used to increase a patient’s range of vision by adjusting the focus of light rays that enter the eye. It combines small-aperture optics with a monofocal IOL. The current main application of the IC-8 is presbyopia correction.

We are excited to add another tool in the tool box for patients undergoing to cataract surgery and looking for a better quality of vision and glasses independence.

Facts:
  • Increase the depth of focus improving reading vision without glasses
  • It’s indicated in patients with astigmatism and irregular corneas
  • Depth of focus is increased, providing patients with good distance and near vision.
