IPL Therapy (Intense Pulsed Light)
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a non-invasive treatment for dry eyes, meibomian gland dysfunction, rosacea, chalazions, and skin conditions. It uses controlled light pulses to target inflammation and blocked glands, improving eye and skin health.
Advanced Technology at Precision Eye Care
At Precision Eye Care, we use OptiLight by Lumenis®, the only FDA-approved IPL machine for treating dry eye disease. This system applies heat to the eyelids, stimulating natural oil production and reducing inflammation for symptom relief.
How IPL Therapy Works
IPL delivers light pulses to the affected areas. As a result, it improves gland function, restores tear stability, and reduces irritation. Additionally, the treatment decreases pro-inflammatory mediators. It also reduces Demodex mites, which are microscopic parasites linked to eye irritation and inflammation.
Ocular Rosacea and Dry Eye
Ocular rosacea causes eye redness, enlarged blood vessels, and irritation, worsening dry eye symptoms. It can result from genetics, bacterial infections, gland blockages, or aging, making it harder to maintain eye comfort.

Who Can Benefit?
IPL therapy can be beneficial for individuals experiencing dry, red, itchy, or irritated eyes, excessive tearing, blurry vision, or eyelid inflammation. In addition, patients with enlarged blood vessels, rosacea, or chronic eye irritation may also experience significant improvement with IPL treatment.

Initial Consultation:
The Precision Eye Care team will conduct a thorough eye exam. We will review your medical history and assess current dry eye treatments. Additionally, we will evaluate your Fitzpatrick skin tone, which determines your skin’s melanin level. This ensures IPL therapy is safe and effective. This assessment helps us determine if IPL is the best treatment option and whether it’s cost-effective for you.
Treatment:
Before treatment, we apply a cooling cream to your cheeks, nose, eyelids, and forehead. This keeps your skin comfortable.
Protective eye shields are also placed to safeguard your eyes. The IPL machine delivers controlled light pulses to the targeted areas. Afterward, we perform meibomian gland expression to restore oil flow and improve natural tear production.
IPL therapy is quick, lasting only 10 minutes, and is generally well-tolerated with minimal discomfort.
Aftercare and Recovery:
Your facial skin will be more sensitive to sunlight after IPL therapy. Therefore, proper sun protection is essential for healing. Use sunscreen when outdoors, and consider wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin from excessive sun exposure. You can typically resume your usual dry eye treatment the same day, without affecting IPL therapy’s effectiveness.
Expected Results:
Most patients notice symptom improvement after the third IPL session. Inflammation decreases, and gland function improves. Many with chronic dry eye report needing fewer eye drops. They also enjoy a more comfortable, irritation-free lifestyle after treatment.
Cost:
It is important to note that medical insurances won’t cover IPL therapy. On average, IPL treatment costs between $800 and $1200. This is for the recommended three to four sessions, spaced two weeks apart. If you’ve heard of IPL therapy and want to learn more, schedule your consultation at Precision Eye Care.
When IPL therapy is not recommended:
IPL therapy is not recommended for patients with skin cancer, a history of cold sores, or Herpes 1 or 2. It is also contraindicated for those with immunosuppression. Additionally, IPL is not suitable for individuals with lupus, porphyria, or recent facial radiation.
Furthermore, this therapy should be avoided by patients using medications that increase photosensitivity.
