New Research Shows Highly Nearsighted Adults Face a Greater Risk of Glaucoma

What Is High Myopia?

The researchers compared three groups:

What Did the Researchers Discover?

The results were striking.

After adjusting for age, sex, diabetes, hypertension, and other medical conditions, researchers found that:

  • Adults with myopia had a 44% higher risk of developing glaucoma.
  • Adults with high myopia had a 167% higher risk (hazard ratio 2.67) of developing glaucoma compared with adults without myopia.

Even more concerning, patients with high myopia were much more likely to require glaucoma surgery.

Compared with individuals without myopia:

  • Patients with myopia had a 71% greater likelihood of glaucoma surgery.
  • Patients with high myopia were more than three times as likely to require glaucoma surgery.
  • The need for more advanced filtering procedures, such as trabeculectomy, was four times higher in patients with high myopia.

These findings demonstrate that high myopia is not simply a vision problem—it is an important lifelong risk factor for glaucoma.

Why Are Highly Nearsighted Eyes More Vulnerable?

Researchers continue to study why glaucoma occurs more frequently in highly myopic eyes.

Several factors may contribute:

  • Longer eye length places mechanical stress on the optic nerve.
  • Structural changes around the optic nerve can make damage more likely.
  • Glaucoma can be more difficult to recognize because myopic eyes often have unusual optic nerve anatomy.
  • Patients with high myopia may not notice early visual field loss until significant damage has already occurred.
